Traditional African marriages are no doubt one of the most colourful events you’ll see.
As our tribes, ethnicity and cultures differ, so does our attire during any ceremony.
Have you ever attended any traditional marriage in any of the tribes in Akwa Ibom State? Did you notice the elegantly colourful umbrella carried by the bride or her train? Ever wondered what the umbrella represents?
Well, we’re here to let you in on our findings. First of all, their seems not to be any traditional significance attached to the bride’s umbrella. It is typically there as an accessory.
That said, the umbrella as we all know gives shade and covering from both the rain and the sun. So, it would be safe to say that these embellished umbrellas are used for the purpose of protecting the bride from sun.
Another reason brides use an umbrella is for the sheer sense of style and elegance it adds to their accessories. The umbrellas are usually same colour with their outfits and accessories which make an elegant ensemble to behold.
Since the inclusion of umbrellas by Akwa- Ibom brides became trendy, no bride wants to be left behind in this graceful display of ensembles.
Are there other reasons you think an Ibom bride carries the umbrella? We would love to read your comments below.
